My Experiments

These are my own experiments in multimedia elements. My focus area is on mobile vertical scroll comics, so my experiments reflect that. My theory on multimedia comics revolves around the concept of scrolling. I feel that when an artist throws a gif or video into their comic, it disrupts the readers flow. Instead I think that animated elements should keep with the scroll rhythm (outside of a few exceptions). So instead of a gif, I would use something like GSAP ScrollTrigger to play an animation on scroll. That way the reader controls the speed with their own hands, the same way they normally read a comic. But this is all just my preference. Comics are a diverse art made even moreso with digital elements, and I hope artists can do all the crazy things they want. I just want to warn that my experiments are mobile focused, but do not let that discourage you if you want to pursue desktop focused multicomics.

Gyroscopic parallax

see it here.

This is my idea for what a cover image or splash page for a mobile multicomic could be. While this does go against my idea that animations should be scroll centered, this one is still user controlled, and ideally is not used directly in the comic, so I think it still works. My resource for creating this was Matthew Wagerfield's parallax.js library on github. You can see more about this in resources. While my focus for this experiment was mobile gyroscope, this parallax effect actually works with desktop mouse tracking too.
